My first months as an Actuarial Analyst at McGing

Working at McGing for the last few months has been a great experience. I have worked on a variety of different projects, learnt a lot of valuable lessons, and met some insightful, wonderful people.

Project experience

Coming into my first full-time job I had very few expectations. However, thanks to Sean and the team, the experience so far has gone beyond what I could have imagined. I have been given significant responsibility and been trusted with a wide variety of tasks and projects.

Some of the projects I have had a role in at McGing include:

  • Insurance Management Framework (IMF), Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Process (ICAAP) and Risk Management Framework (RMF) reviews
  • Return on Investment (ROI) modelling and
  • Quarterly life insurance capital adequacy calculations.

I have also been involved in project management, liaising directly with clients, and supporting business development activities.

Workplace culture

The environment at McGing is collaborative, open and inviting. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know my co-workers. They are always willing to share their knowledge, answer any questions that I have, and are more than happy to have a friendly chat.

My opinions are always valued and encouraged at McGing. After any meeting that Sean and I attend together, he will always ask for my thoughts and views on how the meeting went. Knowing that my input is valued gives me confidence and allows me to feel part of the team.

There is a strong emphasis on maintaining a good work-life balance. When Neekhil heard that I stopped going to the gym, he urged me to continue with my exercise habits. Since returning to the gym, I have found that I feel more relaxed, positive, and productive, with motivation from work to put my health and wellbeing first.

What is in store for the future?

As an Actuarial Analyst, I am well-versed in the uncertainty that the future brings with it. However, I would like to continue with my Actuarial education through the Actuaries Institute, hoping to gain my Associateship and eventually qualify as a Fellow.

Even though I have only been at McGing for a short time, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience thus far and am looking forward to what the future has in store.
